APPLICATION FOR STARTING IN 2025-I
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
The Graduate Program in Physics (PPGFIS) Stricto Sensu of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) offers positions for Master’s (Magister Scientiae) and Doctorate (Doctor Scientiae) in the following areas of concentration:
- a) Devices and sensors;
- b) Equilibrium and non-equilibrium critical phenomena;
- c) Theoretical and experimental biological physics;
- d) Production and characterization of thin films, composites and new materials;
- e) Complex systems;
- f) Magnetic systems and nanostructured magnetic materials;
- g) Mathematical physics and quantum field theory.
The selection of applicants will be carried out according to criteria approved by the Coordinating Committee of PPGFIS, for subsequent approval by that Committee and the Council of Graduate Studies (CTP) of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (PPG) of UFV.
II. REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Masters and Doctorate candidates must register and take the exam of the Unified Examination of Graduate Courses in Physics (EUF), any edition of the last 03 (three) years.
The candidate for Master’s degree must hold a higher education diploma in Physics or related fields. It is highly recommended that, regardless of the undergraduate course completed, the candidate has taken one or more disciplines in the professional cycle of the undergraduate course in Physics, such as “Electromagnetism”, “Quantum Physics” and “Statistical Physics”.
The PhD candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Physics or related fields. The Coordinating Committee may waive the Master’s degree for admission to the Doctorate, based on criteria of academic merit.
Only the candidate who presents the required documentation within the deadlines established in the calendar of the selection process will have the registration approved by the Coordinating Committee of the PPGFIS. The candidate is responsible for the veracity and authenticity of all documents and information provided.
III. APPLICATION
The applications on the Graduate Program in Applied Physics (PPGFIS) of UFV must be made on line. The applicant must apply for the Unified Examination of Graduate Courses in Physics (EUF) (click here for the site)
Note: The validity of the grade obtained in the EUF exam for our Selection Process is 03 (three) years. There is no requirement for the candidate to hold the latest available edition of the EUF.
The candidate must also register in the GPS system on the website https://gps.ufv.br/gps-web/editais/980/ da Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies at UFV.
The candidate, when accessing the GPS system of the “Pró-Reitora de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação da UFV”, must pay attention to all the filling stages. Unfinished or incomplete registrations will be rejected.
IV. ABOUT UFV’S AFFIRMATIVE ACTION POLICY
According to Resolution 08/2019 of the UFV Teaching, Research and Extension Council (CEPE), PPGFIS will reserve 20% of the available places in the Selection Process, per course (Master’s and Doctorate), for:
- Applicants who self-declared as black (black and brown) or indigenous;
- Applicants who do not self-declare as black (black and brown) or indigenous, but have a disability.
During the registration process, applicants must choose one of the reserved spot categories for which they wish to compete.
The UFV will adopt a hetero-identification and document verification process for black candidates (black and brown), to validate the self-declaration of the applicants to vacancies reserved for black people (blacks and browns) or indigenous people.
Similarly, the UFV, in accordance with art. 4th of Decree No. 3,298, of 1999, in Law No. 12,764, of 2012 and considering people with disabilities as those with monocular vision, it will verify the condition of applicants with disabilities through a Disability Verification Committee.

IV. EVALUATION CRITERIA OF APPLICANTS TO MASTER’S AND DOCTORATE
The selection of applicants for the Master’s and Doctorate will be held according to the following criteria:
- a) Grade obtained in the exam EUF;
- b) Analysis of the undergraduate and graduate school records;
- c) Analysis of the curriculum vitae;
- d) Interview (in person or via internet – to be combined with the applicant). The purpose of the interview is to assess the candidate’s maturity for admission to graduate school, as well as to know his / her preference (s) among the lines of research and possible advisors of the Program. The successful applicants according to the selection criteria referred to in the preceding paragraph shall be called according to the rank order.
V. FINAL INFORMATIONS
Approved applicants may be awarded available scholarships from the quotas of the Graduate Program in Physics at UFV, following the ranking order. Scholarships will be allocated primarily to students who do not combine them with other sources of income. Rules regarding the accumulation of scholarships are available in the internal regulations of the PPG-Physics, which can be found on the program’s website at http://www.posfisica.ufv.br/
VI. SCHEDULE
– Application in the https://gps.ufv.br/gps-web/editais/980/: October 21 to November 30, 2024.
– Interview (in person or via the internet): Date to be determined by the coordinating committee, initially scheduled for the period from December 02 to December 05, 2024.
– Final results: December 12, 2024.
– Registration at UFV: March 06, 2025.
– Start of activities: March 10, 2025.
VII. FURTHER INFORMATION
At the time of enrollment, the approved applicant must meet the requirements of Chapter V of the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program Regulations of UFV and submit the following documents:
(i) A certified copy of the diploma or graduation certificate. For the doctorate, a certified copy of the master’s diploma or completion certificate is also required, except in specific cases waived by the coordinating committee.
(ii) A certified copy of the undergraduate transcript. For the doctorate, a certified copy of the master’s transcript is also required, except in specific cases waived by the coordinating committee.
(iii) curriculum;
(iv) copies of the corroborating documents of all items included in the curriculum;
(v) copy of birth or wedding certificate;
(vi) copy of the I. D. or passport;
(viii) registration fee payment voucher and
(ix) a wallet-size picture.
If the applicant, upon application, has only a certificate of completion of the course, it will be his responsibility to present to the Registrar’s Office of UFV a certified copy of his diploma.
Foreign applicants must submit, in addition, the documents required by specific legislation.
